Pests Be Gone! Nik Wyers, Joint Managing Director at Floorbrite, discusses the main risk factors care homes
should look out for when it comes to pest control and methods which they can implement to prevent infestation.
As with all pest control, identifying potential risk factors is the first step in preventing pests and the infectious diseases that they carry. However, this is more important than ever when dealing with the care industry which services society’s most vulnerable.
Thorough pest control prevents secondary infection in care and nursing homes but it takes a high level of expertise to deliver complete reassurance against pests. Care homes are very busy and it can seem almost impossible to stop insects in particular, especially cockroaches, ants, and flies, from coming into the building in search of food and warmth.
Floorbrite, a Manchester-based Cleaning and Facility Service Management company, provides reactive as well as proactive and preventative pest control. Our team of fully trained technicians are able to deal with all manner of pest related issues, quickly and effectively with minimal impact on residents- they don’t rush the job but they do it effectively and quickly to get it right first time, every time.
What we’ve found over the years is that the kitchens and food stores in care homes provide ideal conditions for pests – from eating the food to contaminating almost everything they touch as they make their way around the fabric of the building.
Practical procedures should be put in place by staff at the care home, including looking out for evidence of the presence of pests (droppings, nests, chew marks for example), and nominating a member of staff to take on the role of Pest Monitoring Officer.
However, an expert overview from a quality service provider will help maintain a safe environment for staff and visitors, minimising the spread of disease and germs through pests.
We offer cleaning services involving the removal, treatment and disinfection of nesting material and infected goods and maintaining a minimum level of pest activity via a number of pest proofing and deterrent systems.
