INSIGHT e market developments and future predictions for the resilient flooring market.
Future Prospects Despite the significant impact of Covid-19 in 2020 and disruption to supply chains, there are indications that the resilient floorcoverings market began recovery along with the easing of restrictions across construction in H2 2020. However, growth is hesitant in some of the key sectors that typically demand resilient flooring, particularly retail – as a greater proportion of purchases move from bricks-and- mortar shops to online – the hospitality, entertainment and leisure sector, and also offices – due to the move to more homeworking. The resilient floorcovering sub-sector is forecast to return to growth of 4% in 2021 and anticipated to reach £389m, very similar to the 2019 position.

As the resilient flooring market is heavily dependent upon replacement of existing floorcoverings, there is concern that businesses and organisations are unlikely to invest when there is an economic slowdown. Consequently, replacement of floorcoverings in some sectors, especially hospitality and retail, may be placed on hold until the economy recovers, or cheaper products may be chosen. Education and healthcare projects are however likely to prove more robust.
And we cannot forget the Brexit effect, as the floorcoverings industry is heavily dependent upon imports, any negative fluctuation in the value of Sterling against the Euro and US$ will squeeze margins.
