Daniel Felgate currently works as a warehouse manager for Direct Commercial Flooring in Stoke-on-Trent. Looking for a change in career, he wants to learn how to fit flooring and was sent on the course by his boss. He said: “I want to get knowledge from the courses first, then I’ll go out with the remedial fitters and learn from them.”


Also on the course are Harry Burr, contracts manager at his family firm CDC Flooring. Newly appointed in his role, Harry is looking to get a year’s experience on the tools under his belt.


Darren Berriman from Whilton Locks Carpets in Nottinghamshire is new to the UK after relocating from South Africa. Currently working in sales, he wants to learn about subfloor preparation in order to become an estimator.


Rhys Tummey, Jake Skinner and Tom Clayton work together as fitters at Western Carpets, Leamington Spa. Jake has 11 years’ experience and has worked on commercial installations as well as taking part in shows. He now works with Tom and Rhys mainly on domestic side fitting LVT, carpet and vinyl. A relative newcomer to the industry, Rhys has been fitting for 18 months and wants to learn more about the products they should be using as well as how to identify problems with subfloors. For Tom, who has worked fitting solid wood floors in the past, his hopes are the same.


As soon as everyone has arrived, it’s time to get down to business as we were led to the Training Centre. All courses are led by F. Ball’s head of training Tim Green.
