SOLUTION PROVIDER Q&A
Shaping the future of healthcare by leveraging AI innovation
In which ways do you believe AI has real potential to transform hospital, medical group, and health system operations? What are the most promising use cases
happening right now? Conversational AI is already trans- forming healthcare by streamlining workflows and reducing burdensome administrative tasks. Most impressively, the technology is lessening physician burnout and helping improve the overall physician-patient relationship, which are major problems in healthcare that have only been intensified by COVID-19. Healthcare systems across the world
use Nuance’s ambient clinical intelli- gence (ACI) solution, Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX), to automatically cap- ture and contextualize detailed clinical notes, eliminating burdensome notetak- ing. With Nuance DAX, physicians can focus on better engaging their patients, rather than their keyboards. The use cases don’t stop there; AI is
playing an essential role across the entire continuum of care including solutions around computer-aided physician doc- umentation (CAPD), clinical document improvement (CDI), radiology workflow, and more.
What are the core challenges that still exist in leveraging AI for
these purposes? Although the adoption of Conversational AI has historically taken a slower route in healthcare relative to other industries and consumer markets, there is now broad recognition of its potential and we’ve seen healthcare systems more recently look to accelerate their use of the technology to drive meaningful out- comes. The recent transformation of digi- tal front doors for patients and telehealth applications for virtual visits stood up over the last 10 months during the pan- demic is a perfect example of what’s possible when there’s an immediate
problem to solve, and we are seeing a similar trend in how healthcare systems are now adopting Conversational AI to help physicians focus on the patient.
How are you specifically helping your customers in this area as
they respond to the pandemic? COVID-19 spurred digital innovation, especially around telehealth and the digital front door. Providers report up to 175 times the number of telehealth visits compared to pre-pandemic levels, and 57 percent of providers view tele- health more favorably now. In response, Nuance expanded its DAX capabilities to support remote care as soon as tele- health adoption began to skyrocket. With Nuance DAX, physicians can onboard remotely, capture patient encounters securely through personal devices, and automatically create clinical notes dur- ing telehealth visits. In September, Nuance also integrated
DAX with Microsoft Teams to synthesize physician-patient conversations during virtual visits through Microsoft Teams. It incorporates patient data from elec- tronic health records (EHRs) to populate a clinical note for physicians to review within the patient’s medical record.
When do you think it’s reasonable to expect healthcare organizations to see an ROI on their AI investments? Or is that
already happening now? From day one of implementation, AI offloads administrative tasks such as documenting patient encounters by automatically capturing the conversa- tion and converting it into a clinical note. With the efficiencies that result in time savings with Nuance DAX for example, organizations can increase revenue with additional throughput, or give the time back to physicians to reduce burnout and the associated attrition and hiring costs, or they can do both—give some of the
time back to physicians so they can see additional patients. The ROI for conver- sational AI is real and measurable today.
Can you offer any predictions for how AI in healthcare will continue
to evolve in the near term? Conversational AI is the new user interface and we are using it more and more in our lives every day. The use of AI-powered voice in healthcare is grow- ing and will continue to grow to further increase efficiencies that enable physi- cians to focus on patients and deliver quality care and enable healthcare orga- nizations to improve financial outcomes. With Nuance DAX, we are using AI to understand what’s being discussed between a physician and patient, which over time will open up an entire clinical intelligence ecosystem fueled by differ- ent AI algorithms that can be selected and seamlessly deployed to clinical teams at the point of care to solve com- plex operational and clinical challenges.
