SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

Celebrating 30 years with City & Guilds Group

By Sally O’Connell, UK Training Centre Manager for Spirax Sarco

Thirty years is a long time, isn’t it? Like a pearl wedding anniversary, it shows a strong relationship that’s stood the test of time, and that’s exactly what we have with City & Guilds Group.

Beginning in 1989, our partnership was born out of The Dairy Trade Federation and City & Guilds’ decision to introduce a skills-testing scheme for the validation and accreditation of maintenance engineers in the dairy industry. This led to the introduction of a nationally recognised certificate, where Spirax Sarco were the only authorised provider of Steam Plant Maintenance training for the scheme.

During the three decades we’ve held course-accreditation, we’ve been able to consistently develop our course offering, further strengthening our international reputation for the quality of training we provide. This includes gaining accreditation for our Steam Plant Maintenance course, which replaced the previous Dairy Trade version following its withdrawal by City & Guilds, and our Steam Boiler Plant Fundamentals (Shell Boiler) course.

Our courses We’re very proud to offer courses that meet the high standards required by City & Guilds, delivered from our state- of-the-art training facility in Cheltenham. Designed for anyone involved in the planning, upgrading or day-to-day running of steam boilers, the Steam Boiler Plant Fundamentals (Shell Boiler) course provides an understanding of the wet side of the boiler. The course also outlines trends in the management and control of boiler plant in order to achieve safe and efficient operation.

Our accredited Steam Plant Maintenance course is another cornerstone of our training offering. Developed using our unparalleled understanding of the application of steam, the course demonstrates how to competently operate steam systems in a safe and efficient fashion. The course’s syllabus is approved by City & Guilds, and provides delegates with the basic knowledge and practical skills required to maintain and find faults in steam systems through practical, hands-on exercises.
