KEEPING UP with EUROPE’S ELECTRIC TRANSITION T

he European electricity sector is evolving at an unprecedented pace, requiring the entire industry to innovate, transform and collaborate like never before. Electricity is set to become the medium for a clean energy future. But in the process, the power industry will morph into something that looks rather different to today. In particular, digital technology is

sparking fundamental change in the generation, delivery and consumption of European electricity. Perhaps most notably, the rise of decentralisation and the move to electrify economic activity such as heating, cooling and transport are both crucial steps towards decarbonisation, and together are a driving force behind the focus on smart grids and smart cities. Of course, for this to work, the

industry will need to embrace cutting- edge technological trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT). This won’t be easy. But the opportunities will come for the smartest and best prepared. The power sector is becoming

a platform upon which established utilities and technology providers are coming together with a plethora of new entrants. With this, established business models are changing, with

major players such as ABB, GE and Siemens all developing into digital- first companies. This transition is set

to redefine the future of the continent’s electricity market. As it gathers pace, there is a genuine and vital need for a platform that provides clarity, facilitates connections and defines the industry’s roadmap. For 25 years PennWell’s Power-Gen

Europe has been leading the charge. But such unprecedented change calls for a new approach. That’s why this year the company has launched Electrify Europe – a unique platform where players from sectors across the whole electricity value chain can meet to share and develop new ideas and solutions. Electrify Europe will take place

in Vienna from June 19-21. It is the world’s first platform event dedicated to the convergence of the power sector with the drivers of digitisation, decentralisation and electrification from both within and outside the sector, covering the whole supply chain. It is Europe’s largest hub focused on the unrivalled convergence within the electric power industry, as well as

with the ICT, IoT & AI, Telecoms and eMobility sectors. The event will provide an

opportunity for the best and brightest business and technological minds, including R&D trailblazers, corporate and start-up visionaries and political leaders to provide insight into a market that is growing in complexity – building a dynamic and rapidly expanding ecosystem in which economic ideas, technical solutions and political visions co-operate, collaborate, and co-create. Ultimately, this is how we as an

industry can keep up with the electric transition and take the power industry in Europe forward into a new, exciting future. l
