ENGINEERING A NET ZERO FUTURE
ngineers abound at All-Energy, the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference, and the co-located Dcarbonise (SEC Glasgow, 10-11 May) speaking, on exhibition stands and attending as visitors eager to learn. The shows’ interests are wide but their aims are similar – to better engineer an integrated net zero future and increasingly to work towards energy security. The two themes resemble a

duo of juggernauts rolling forward in unison.
All-Energy concentrates on
renewable generation along with hydrogen, energy systems, energy storage, finance and funding; transmission, networks and more; while Dcarbonise embraces the interests of the end-user of that energy; and decarbonisation of the built environment, heat, transport, cities/ places, industry and the supply chain. Attendance at the exhibition, conference and the Giant Networking Evening is free of charge to all with relevant business or academic interests. As Jonathan Heastie, portfolio director Energy & Marine, RX Global, which owns and organises the co-located events, explains: “The All-
Energy and Dcarbonise exhibitions boast a veritable, and constantly growing, list of key organisations; and the conference programme looks at the wide range of highly relevant topics covering all forms of renewable energy to cyber security; delivering green jobs to unlocking grid capacity; green heat to focussing on Innovate UK’s work; and so much more. RANGE OF BEARINGS FOR THE WIND POWER SECTOR
gearboxes and generators. The Austrian bearing manufacturer has more than 20 years of experience in the wind energy sector. NKE bearings have been installed in more than 4,000 wind turbines across Europe, the USA and China, equivalent to more than 10,000MW of installed power. “NKE bearings are used in the most important wind turbine components, that is gearboxes and generators, or as main bearings. We have final product approvals with major wind turbine manufacturers and are in the final stages of the approval process with others,” says Matthias Ortner, managing director of NKE. “The strategic focus on sustainable technologies such as wind power and rail vehicles

t this year’s Hannover Messe, NKE Austria presented bearings for wind turbine
that was introduced three years ago is now bearing fruit. We are gaining a reputation as an innovative supplier of bearings for wind power.” For example, NKE bearings are
present in all bearing applications of the Envision gearbox: from the carrier (rotor side, generator side) to the high- speed shaft, including the intermediate shaft and planetary gearbox shafts. “For high-speed shafts, NKE cooperates with the customer’s engineering team to design bearings with enhanced profile and contact
pressure,” says Michael Rössl of NKE’s Application Engineering department. “Another example are our new bearings with Power-Density technology: they are only 20% larger than conventional bearings, but they generate twice as much energy to optimise the output of the wind turbines and extract as much energy as possible from the air stream.” NKE has established a competence centre for large bearings at its headquarters, including advanced production facilities and a logistics centre. Its Application Engineering department also offers support for obtaining certification to wind standards such as GL2010, IEC61400. ●
