Welcome When an arm or other limbs
are amputated or lost, a prosthesis can play a significant role in rehabilitation. For many people, an artificial limb can improve mobility and the ability to manage daily activities, as well as provide the means to stay independent. Early prosthetics were
uncomfortable and bulky to wear, but modern technologies such as 3D-printing have opened up new avenues for more lightweight solutions. Meanwhile, advances in compact motors have paved the way for better function in such technology. Indeed, as you may have gathered for our cover story, we explore the engineering marvels that have helped improve the form of function of today’s prosthetics (pages 6-9). Also in this issue, we bring you
a project from the University of Warwick that is investigating the 5G readiness of vehicles and equipment (pages 10-11), the future trends in the world of additive manufacturing (pages 18-19) according to IDTechEx, and a show review of this year’s Southern Manufacturing and Electronics event (pages 28-29). Elsewhere, Nicola Brittain
looks into the most important considerations when upgrading to smart street lighting (pages 26-27), Katherine Nowill unveils the many advantages of friction welding (page 30), bespoke mould tooling solutions being developed for over half a century are explored in our Materials, Process and Finishes section, and Nathan Rawlings examines additive manufacturing innovations in thermal management (pages 24-25).
