SOUTHERN MANUFACTURING & ELECTRONICS 2024 SHOW REVIEW


A busy show with a focus on international collaboration and sustainability. By Nicola Brittain


T


he long-standing Southern Manufacturing and Electronics show took place between the 6-8 February


and featured 600 exhibitors of engineering solutions. The exhibition catalogue said the show had a focus on ‘establishing supply chains and forging new partnerships’, notably in China, and as I’ll explain later, was the focus of several exhibitors with impressive stands on the floor. Similarly, I attended a seminar presented by Anna Lothsson, Sustainability Director of NCAB, on how to ensure international partner companies abide by sustainable goals, and another by Andy Dobson at Lean 4 Business on

procurement considerations when choosing a new supplier. The show itself was easy to


navigate, described by one exhibitor as ‘buzzy’. In fact, Dobson said it was busier than last year. His hunch was although there was still considerable economic uncertainty, companies “did not want to sit on their hands any longer and were beginning to bring new products to market”. Another attendee agreed the show was busy but was unsure whether anyone was actually buying! A ubiquitous theme in seminars and on the show floor was how best to collaborate with Chinese suppliers and manufacturers or run divisions in the country.


EYE-CATCHING STANDS There were several eye-catching stands, not least one from Rebound Electronics featuring an outsized Pac- Man screen. The company’s business model was interesting too. A partner for manufacturers of semiconductors and electromechanical components, the company has ‘global reach’ with ‘local support’ as well as offices in 21 countries. A representative also claimed that the company’s technical and market expertise will act as an ‘disruptor’ by offering high quality and automotive approved manufacturers from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East at “a fraction of the cost charged by Tier 1 incumbents”. The company supplies a range of products including discrete semiconductors such as diodes, transistors, LEDs, and TVs; as
