SOURCE TESTING ASSOCIATION I Annual Guide 2022
With other mercury monitoring systems, the QAL3 tests need to be performed manually by third parties bringing an external mercury vapour calibrator to site to perform the QAL3 tests. This incurs substantial additional operating costs and downtime. The annual cost of such QAL3 could be in the region of 6000 euros or more.
Overcoming the technical challenges of continuous
mercury monitoring There are several technical challenges that need to be solved when measuring mercury concentrations from emission gasses.
Firstly, having different mercury compounds presents a challenge. Mercury in its atomic form is extremely “sticky” and readily reacts with other molecules as well as any tubing or other material that mercury comes into contact with.
The Gasmet CMM uses two design elements which
combat this issue Firstly, the Gasmet CMM uses short sampling lines to reduce the surface area that the mercury can react with. The lines also have a special coating which is stable and unreactive with mercury.
Secondly, the Gasmet CMM sample is heavily diluted with nitrogen, which gives the mercury fewer options for its molecules to react with. By using nitrogen for dilution this solves potential problems. For instance, memory effects, where the sample gas reacts with sampling materials, can cause delays in response time for the system. Quenching can also occur when using undiluted sampling which can cause under-reporting of mercury. The Gasmet CMM use nitrogen for dilution, virtually eliminating the quenching effects from strong quenching gases like O2
, CO2 , and H2 O.
All mercury monitoring systems only detect atomic mercury vapor (Hg0
mercury compounds like HgCl2. In order to get an accurate
mercury measurement, all mercury compounds in the sample need to be measured.
To overcome this issue the Gasmet CMM passes the sample through an optimized thermal converter immediately prior to the sample cell. The converter reduces all mercury compounds into elemental mercury, allowing for an accurate reading of total mercury concentration regardless of the ratio between different compounds.
Gasmet CMM use cold vapor atomic fl uorescence (CVAF) technology that offers unparalleled responsiveness, sensitivity, and accuracy. The technology has been optimized specifi cally for mercury detection from hot, wet, and corrosive fl ue gas emissions.
