Annual Guide 2022 I SOURCE TESTING ASSOCIATION

Quality and Technical task group

The Quality and Technical task group specifi cally addresses those issues relating to improving the value and reliability of the results we provide to our customers as stack testers. The topics routinely discussed include profi ciency testing (PT) schemes, relevant CEN standards and EA method implementation documents, EN 14181 guidance, calibration techniques and the availability of calibration gases. In addition to a large number of stack testing companies, UKAS, EA, process operators and gas supply companies also attend the meetings, enabling issues and topics raised by members to be addressed in the meetings.

The Quality Task Group is active in producing guidance for members, including the STA Guide to the calculation of uncertainty, and the example uncertainty calculation spreadsheets. Members also have the opportunity to input in to EA guidance and CEN and ISO standards.

In addition the Quality and Technical groups also undertake specifi c projects, often with EA or DIUS support, to investigate particular issues related to stack testing methods.

Process Operators task group

The Process Operators Task Group generally meet three times a year in conjunction with the other groups to review developments in legislation and standards and to share practical experience of continuous monitoring, quality assurance and related issues, such as permitting and reporting.

Equipment suppliers task group

Representing the manufacturers and distributors of particulate and gas CEMs, portable instrumentation, sampling equipment and calibration gas suppliers, the group focuses on being a focal point on regulatory, certifi cation and standards issues relevant to emissions monitoring with particular focus on technical issues. The equipment suppliers group provides a technical input into UK regulatory consultations related to emissions monitoring, the MCERTS certifi cation process, European and MID standards and is a forum for resolving issues common across equipment suppliers

Small business task group

Small businesses are innovative, enterprising and fl exible. According to the Federation of Small Businesses they account for 51% of private sector turnover, 59% of the private sector work force and 60% of all commercial innovations.

The STA Small Businesses Task Force (SBTG) was formed to monitor developments in our industry, and to represent the interests of smaller companies at meetings of the other STA Task Groups.

Our principal objectives are: • To promote the interests of members • To protect members’ business • To identify the continuously changing needs of members

EN14181 task group

This group representing, process operators, regulators, test houses, suppliers of CEMs and consultants is focused on developing additional practical guidance and work protocols. The intention is to build on the pragmatic UK approach to EN-14181, the task group has been focusing on:

• Terms of Reference (EN 14181; EN ISO 16911) • Stack fl ow: uncertainty; rectangular ducts • CO2

and N2 O requirements

• DAHS averaging • AST vs repeat QAL2 every year • AST failures • Measurement uncertainty at low concentrations

Low Particulate Task group

The LPM task group has been set up to investigate measurement techniques at low particulate concentrations including non-isokinetic. The TG has been looking at monitoring technologies and the application of EN 13284-1 with respect to low level concentrations as well as current instrumental and future technologies. Uncertainties at low ELVs, particulate sizing has also featured high on the group’s agenda. The group has had presentations from several manufactures from around Europe and following the initial fact fi nding and information gathering the TG has produced a draft guidance note which will be published early 2022.

HCL Task Group

The HCL task group was set up for Equipment Suppliers, Process operators, Test House’s and regulators to discuss the topic of failures of QAL2 and AST failures relating especially to HCl and SO2

The group has also discussed the following and have created industry guidance on the subject:

• Cold spots (installation of CEMs and setup of SRM) • Heated probes / lines with cold areas due to t/c position • Contamination of lines (especially from gas validations using dry gases) • Pacifi cation times for SRM kit • Interferences (Specifi cally Water and Ammonia) • Ambient temp

• Ammonium Chloride:- o Build on fi lters o Effect of stack temp etc • Reliability of SRM method • Suitable heated probes and fi lters inc fi lter materials • Understanding difference in the way SRM and CEMs are setup to cope with interferences

• Suitability of wet validation systems on site
