Victorian State Minister for Environment and Climate Change Visits Innovative Ecomanufacturer
The Victorian State Minister for Environment and Climate Change, The Hon Ryan Smith recently visited Ecotech (Australia) to find out more about the design and development of environmental monitoring systems.
The Minister toured different divisions at the Knoxfield headquarters including production and testing, research and development, a wind tunnel calibration facility and environmental reporting services, which provides real-time data from over 360 sites to a diverse range of customers.
“I was impressed by the unique and innovative approach of this local family business and the fact that they are constantly developing environmental solutions for worldwide distribution,” said The Hon Ryan Smith.
The company has been working closely with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria for over 20 years and also has a long association with
Transurban CityLink, a leading international toll road developer with assets in Australia and emerging interests in North America. Partnering with the University of Wollongong, Ecotech has also developed a comprehensive greenhouse analyser which continuously measures all principle greenhouse gases.
“As one of only a few companies who manufacture internationally approved air quality analysers and systems, we have a niche market and export to over 65 countries. We are also a world leader in the design and supply of precursor gas monitoring systems,” said Ecotech Director and Founder, Robert Dal Sasso.

Personal Air Sampling Pumps Passed for Use at Potentially Explosive Plants and Production Sites in Australia and New Zealand
Casella CEL’s TUFF™ range of Personal Air Sampling Pumps - rugged pumps for use in harsh monitoring environments – has recently gained ANZEx Intrinsically Safe approval for use in flammable atmospheres. This means the TUFF pumps can be used in hazardous plants and production sites across Australia and New Zealand where this is a potential risk of explosive dust or gas.
This latest certification is in addition to the ATEX (EU) and IECEx (International) Intrinsically Safe approvals Casella CEL’s TUFF Personal Air Sampling Pumps already hold.
Designed to European IP54 standards, which means it is protected from dust and splashing water, the TUFF also differs from ordinary bodily worn pumps in that it is the only Personal Air Sampling Pump in the world to receive the certification to ‘M1’ classification required for mining applications. This allows it to be safely used underground without the need for a hot work permit.

Permeation Tubes for Nitric Acid Vapour Used to Calibrate Air Monitors
Trace concentration mixtures of nitric acid vapour are particularly difficult to prepare and store due to the aggressive chemical properties of nitric acid. Even with conventional permeation or diffusion tubes, establishing the nitric acid emission rate of the device can be problematic. Reagent grade nitric acid is relatively stable but contains thirty percent water and emission is the azeotrope. Pure nitric acid spontaneously decomposes even at room temperature liberating large amounts nitrogen dioxide.
In either case, traceable weight-loss certification is not possible.
KIN-TEKs (USA) Trace Source Permeation Tubes use a mixture of reagent grade nitric and sulphuric acids as the analyte source.
The sulphuric acid binds the water, reducing water emission to negligible levels. Emission of the sulphuric acid is extremely low compared to that of nitric acid, so the emission is primarily nitric acid. Formation of nitrogen oxides in the vapour is minimised by dynamically blending the emission to form trace concentration mixtures that are then used immediately.

Total Mercury Emission Monitor Achieves EN15267-3
Verewa’s Total Mercury Emission Monitor achieves EN15267-3 Certification. As part of DURAG GROUP (UK), Verewa has been manufacturing approved Mercury continuous emission monitors for over 15 years.
From the outset, the HM-1400 TRX total Mercury monitor was designed for emissions monitoring. Integral to that design is a technique that provides a “true” continuous measurement without the aid of pre- concentration and carrier gases. Interferences are all but eliminated using a patented Dual Beam UV Photometer and an optional switching solid Catalytic Converter can offer both “total” and “speciated” Mercury measurements. A very important focus for the design was optimising maintenance intervals and reducing running costs to a minimum.
An optional automatic calibration module can be used to introduce a Mercury sample at the heated sample inlet, thus ensuring calibration of the complete system.
As legislation becomes more stringent and the requirements of modern CEM Systems become more challenging, we are safe in the knowledge that the HM-1400 TRX Total Mercury Emission Monitor achieves EN15267-3 Certification.
