BusinessNews Environmental Impact Assessment


InterGen, advised by international environmental consultancy ENVIRON (UK), has been awarded Section 36 consent by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to expand its natural gas-fired power station.


ENVIRON carried out the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and prepared the Environmental Statement necessary to accompany the Section 36 consent


application and the operating permit application. The expansion represents a substantial investment and will provide 900 megawatts (MW) of additional generating capacity, which is enough electricity to meet the


needs of approximately one million homes. InterGen aims to have the expansion operational by 2014 to help address the projected electricity generation gap in the UK.


The expanded facility will feature the latest natural gas combined cycle technology (CCGT) to ensure maximum energy efficiency and minimal impact on the environment. It will be amongst the most efficient electricity generators in the UK. Mark Somerset, InterGen’s European General Manager said: “We are delighted to have been awarded planning consent for the Spalding Energy Expansion project.


The project demonstrates InterGen’s commitment to providing flexible new generating capacity in the UK, which will play a key role in ensuring secure energy supplies or the future.”


He added, “InterGen has enjoyed being a part of the Spalding community for nearly ten years, during which time we have forged many strong partnerships. We look


forward to building upon these relationships, bringing skilled jobs to the area and boosting local businesses.” Matt Davies, Principal of ENVIRON, said: “This was one of the first projects to be assessed against the government’s carbon capture policy. To support this, our work


on the Environmental Impact Assessment process needed to take a wider view and incorporate the cumulative effects of carbon capture and storage, the associated gas pipeline and power line projects as well as the power station that was the subject of the S36 consent.


“We’re delighted that the project now has consent and are looking forward to working alongside InterGen as the project moves forward to construction.” Construction of the expansion is anticipated to take up to three years, at a cost of £500 million.

Firms Announce Teaming Agreement


Layne Christensen Company (USA) and Aqua- Pure Ventures (USA) have entered into a Teaming Agreement under which the companies intend to jointly promote opportunities and projects where the combination of their respective technologies provide unique solutions for the treatment and disposal of flowback, produced water and other applicable waste streams.


The Teaming Agreement contemplates that both companies will market the other’s products and services to exploit complementary technologies, to provide shale gas operators with a “turnkey solution” for treatment of flowback, produced water and other applicable waste streams. The parties intend that their combined services will provide a comprehensive solution for pre-treatment, re-use and disposal of wastewater using both mobile and permanent facilities.

The UK Environment Agency Tackles Carbon Emissions with Convert2green Bio-Fuel


Waste to energy company Convert2Green has today announced that it is working with the Environment Agency to supply its transport fleet with EN standard bio- fuels as part of the Environment Agency’s goal to reduce its CO2 emissions 33% by 2015. Convert2Green will supply eight of the Environment Agency’s operational depots in England and Wales with B25 bio-diesel which is recycled from 100% waste vegetable oil taken from fully sustainable sources in the UK.


"The waste cooking oil is sourced in the UK, recycled and blended to create the bio-diesel so it has a low


carbon footprint and the whole waste to energy process is undertaken in a plant that is powered by its own bio- fuel generators," said Andy Webb, director, Convert2Green.

New Industrial Doctorate Centre for the Water Sector Launched


A new engineering doctorate centre focused on tackling critical issues in the water sector was recently launched.


The Stream Industrial Doctorate Centre for the Water Sector, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and contributions from industrial sponsors, allows exciting opportunities for collaboration between companies working in the water sector and the leading water engineering research groups at five UK universities – Cranfield University, the University of Exeter, Imperial College London, Newcastle University, and the University of Sheffield.


Each research project is proposed by a company based on their priorities and future vision for the sector; the company is then matched with the university research


group that has the most relevant expertise to contribute. The research topics must be ambitious and aimed at tackling long-term major challenges of the water sector through the application of leading edge science, engineering, and/or management research. Nine collaborative projects were launched in October 2009 and a further fourteen projects were funded in October 2010. Research topics to date have included the impact of climate change on water infrastructure, chemical-free treatment solutions, and real-time monitoring and operational management of water supplies. Industrial partners have included water companies, consultancy firms, and equipment suppliers.


Research engineers enrol on a four-year engineering doctorate (EngD) degree programme and normally spend up to 75% of their time working directly with the industrial sponsor of the project. In the other 25% of their time the research engineers receive bespoke technical and transferable skills / engineering leadership training at the five participating universities, with the primary goal of the centre being to not only conduct important industrially linked research but to also produce the engineering leaders of tomorrow for the water sector.
