New Waste Plastic Process Oil Standard
The new standard will aim to establish consistent methods for analyzing WPPO to support sustainable reuse.
ASTM International has approved a new standard that will fi ll a gap in the waste plastic process oil (WPPO) industry (D8577).
The new standard was developed by the recycled products subcommittee (D02.P0), part of ASTM’s petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants committee (D02).
According to ASTM member Jean- François Borny, there has
been a lot of
work toward being able to utilize mixed WPPOs as a solution.
“This guide is the fi rst step toward unifi cation of the analytical testing needed to analyze WPPO,” says Borny, Global Analytical Services Senior Manager at Lummus Technology. “In a world that must do a better job in reusing the excess waste plastic, we must have a consensus on how to analyze the resulting products from processed mixed waste plastics feeds. This gives WPPO the potential to be reused for multiple fuel needs and other recyclables, and helping us become a greener world.”

New ASTM, IOGP Collaboration Provides
Direct User Access to Key Industry Resources ASTM Compass®
now also includes IOGP publications.
ASTM International and the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) have partnered to provide ASTM users direct access to IOGP’s extensive and globally recognized publications library, representing the collective technical expertise of over 2,500 industry specialists across IOGP’s membership.
ASTM Compass® , already used by the global
energy industry to deliver critical technical content from publishers such as ASTM, American Petroleum Institute, and Bureau Veritas, now also includes IOGP publications. This expanded access empowers engineers, quality managers, regulators, and other stakeholders with globally informed expertise to improve safety, enhance quality, reduce risk, meet compliance, and operate more effi ciently.
Through this collaboration, ASTM Compass will provide direct links to IOGP’s freely accessible online publications library for viewing and downloading. All documents remain hosted and maintained by IOGP,
ensuring users are always seeing the latest offi cial versions.
For more than 50 years, IOGP has been serving the upstream industry as a unique forum to share know-how and recommended practices across its core pillars of Safety, Environment, Engineering, and Energy Transition. IOGP publishes around 100 technical documents a year, incorporating industry expertise from a global membership numbering almost 100 member companies to solve common industry challenges. Its publications library also houses the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP’s) substantial body of knowledge on methane emissions reduction, curated within its Energy Transition Integrated Framework.
Graham Henley, IOGP CEO, said, “The IOGP- ASTM collaboration continues to strengthen our shared goal of equipping the industry with sound and practical resources that support safer operations, higher effi ciency, and meaningful progress on decarbonization.”
“ASTM International operates at the front lines of building a more sustainable, energy- effi cient future through standards, and IOGP’s wealth of expertise makes the organization an ideal partner in this mission,” says Andy Kireta, president of ASTM International. “This collaboration will make ASTM Compass that much stronger for helping professionals at all levels to safely and confi dently navigate decarbonization and energy transitions.”
Providing access to IOGP’s resources is the latest in ASTM’s efforts to provide the standards community with the technology and tools it needs to advance while delivering on its brand promise of “Advancing Standards, Transforming Markets.”
