Conclusion

This Talking Tax publication has been designed to meet a number of objectives. First and foremost, SSE has sought to articulate its tax affairs in a way that would be accessible to more of its stakeholders than to simply those who read the SSE’s financial accounts. Secondly, SSE is publishing its country by country report, on the basis of the guidance that the Fair Tax Mark provides. And finally, for the first time SSE has published its tax strategy in detail.

Before publication SSE sought the views of some of its key stakeholders and external advisers. However, further comment is welcomed from SSE’s stakeholders on the clarity and comprehensiveness of the document as well as the principles that govern SSE’s tax planning. SSE intends to make this publication an annual occurrence and would therefore be keen to learn from this year’s feedback.

Please email: sustainability@sse.com with any comments you may have.

Finally, October 2016 reflected the third consecutive year that SSE has achieved accreditation under the Fair Tax Mark. The reason why SSE pursued that accreditation is as strong as it was in 2014: widespread public distrust in the tax conduct of big companies. SSE, therefore, remains committed to achieving the criteria set by the Fair Tax Mark in order to fulfil its objective of being a low risk and responsible tax payer.
