Total tax contribution
A company’s total tax contribution comprises all the taxes paid to governments by the company (and which are therefore a cost to the company), and those taxes collected by the company on behalf of governments (and which are not, therefore, a cost to the company). SSE’s total tax contribution across the UK and Ireland for the year ended 31 March 2016 was £906.7m.

VAT 2016
VAT The significant change in VAT figures is due to the impact of the VAT domestic reverse charge for wholesale energy supplies. From 1 July 2014, SSE is no longer charged VAT by suppliers of wholesale energy, instead SSE accounts for the VAT that would have been paid to the supplier by way of a reverse charge and reclaim in its VAT returns.
Ireland - Total tax contribution
Ireland is the only country outside of the UK in which SSE has any trading operations. SSE’s total tax contribution in Ireland for the year ended 31 March 2016 was €53.8m (£39.4m) (2015: €54.5m (£42.9m)).
2015
Profit taxes The reduction in corporation tax paid in Ireland is due to the impact of capital allowances available for 2015 and 2016 on the Great Island CCGT plant constructed at County Wexford, Ireland.
