THE AMAZING AMEZOLA By Dawn Bacchus
B
ack at the end of 2004 Isaw a grey thoroughbred advertised forsale; no photobut very local to me,althoughhis
owner did not liveinthe
area. That grey wasAmezola, who went on to win the firsteverqualifier forthe RoR Thoroughbred ShowChampionship, competeatHOYStwice, the RIHS and reach the RoR finalinthe International Arena at Hickstead on severaloccasions. He raced20timesonthe flat, winning once
and as a5-year-old being bought by alady called Cara Bexton to event. He wonhis very first affiliated eventand had aseason’seventing, but it wasn’tentirely his forte. Cara advertised him forashowing or dressage home, which suitedmeasIhad lostmyconfidencejumping. Ibought him in January 2005, and at his
firstshowinthe March of that year he wonthe Racehorse Championship. His fifth showwas at RoyalWindsor, and then it wasontothe South of England wherehequalifiedfor Hickstead. He was6th that year at Hickstead getting through to the International Arena –Ihad jumped there oncebeforein1986 on another ex-racehorse but going through to the main area justbeforethe Derbyonthe Sundaywas amazing. Someone then suggestedtomethatIshowhim as ahack

as well as an RoR, and he went on to qualify forthe RoyalInternational Horse Show. Before Amezola, Ihad only really done local showing and so to suddenly be amongstall these amazing horsesand elegant riderswas fabulous. Afteracouple of seasons, Ifelt that Ihad
used up all my reasonably limited knowledge and Iplaced him with Richardand Marjorie
Ramsaytoproduceasashowhorse. They worked their magic and he qualified for HOYS,both ahack and the retrained racehorse; he wasthenplaced in the later. Ithen had him back formyself, and
we wonthe Amateur Large Hack of The Year at the British ShowHorse Nationals, getting his name on atrophyalready marked by many amazing hacks.
Iretired him from ridden showing when
he was17, and we justdid afew in hand shows;his final showatRoyalCountyof Berkshireresulting in another win. He then retired from competing, but then
fractured ahind leg whilstturned out. He did amazingly well on box rest and came backfrom that
fine.Atthispoint Idecided to retirehim completely, and he movedtolivewith afriend in Cornwall –aretirement with asea view! Very sadly earlier this year he
injuredakneeand we hadtotakethe decision to put him down aged 25. He wononthe racecourse, won eventing
and wasahighly successful showhorse, but mostofall he wasthe mostamazingly gentle horse with averykind temperament.
