FIT FOR LIFE GET TING STARTED IN FITNESS

32

Having set up his own personal training business back in 2003, Ady Watts opened his first facility in 2012. His fitness business has grown to incorporate two Hereford gyms and employs a team of eight highly skilled trainers as well as a growing team of health care professionals.

On the back of the past 18 months, regaining balance in our lives is more of a challenge than it’s ever been. Add to that the conflicting information given to us by so many sources and it’s no wonder we’re unsure of how to get started.

Many of us, myself included, have tried time and time again to lead a healthier, fitter lifestyle only to have failed at the first hurdle. But why is this? Why are we so motivated, yet so easily fail at the first hurdle? Let’s take a look at the existing ways we try to change our behaviours and some fresh thinking that can lead to a stress free, successful way forward.

Almost all programmes dangle the carrot of a big reward at the end to symbolise the programme’s success. But, what if we don’t reach it? Yes, we think we’ve failed, when we probably haven’t. We may have lost one stone and not two but we’ve still done well.

Motivation is like a wave, it comes but can go just as quickly. We therefore need to plan with this in mind. Can we still maintain our new behaviours on the days when we’re not on our best form?

Quite often we set off on a programme that we’ve seen on LIVE24-SEVEN.COM

social media or that a friend is getting success with. The problem is that we haven’t even thought about how it’s going to fit into our life.

Just like setting an unrealistic goal, when we put a time frame on things, we increase the pressure on ourselves to succeed. Having an event to work towards is admittedly a great motivator but we should concentrate on building good daily practices and not being solely focussed on the end goal.
