Nurminen claims fi rst block train between Europe and India

14

Finnish-based Nurminen Logistics is claiming that it will run the fi rst ever block train from Europe to India on the Western wing of the International North- South Transport Corridor (INSTC). INSTC is the 7,200 km long, multi-modal network of

ship,

rail, and road routes for moving freight between India, Russia,

Iran, Europe, and Central Asia. The train route is twice as fast as the maritime route via the Suez Canal, says the forwarder. The block train, operated for

a Nurminen Logistics Swedish customer, departed Helsinki in mid-June and had an expected transit time to Nhava Sheva port near Mumbai of about 25 days. A map on the Nurminen

Issue 5 2021 - Freight Business Journal

Logistics showed a rail routing from Helsinki via Russia and central Asia to Bandar Abbas in Iran followed by a sea leg to Nhava Sheva. While a rail transit is theoretically possible all or most of the way from Europe to the Indian subcontinent, it would involve use of a little used route in unsettled territory between Iran and Pakistan and, to reach India itself, a diffi cult border crossing from Pakistan. There would also be a diff erence in track gauge between Iran and

Pakistan. On 3 June, Nurminen Logistics

chief executive Olli Pohjanvirta, signed a memorandum of cooperation with chief executive of the Russian Railways’ RZD Logistic arm, Dmitry Murev, at the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg. The document envisages a joint study of logistics opportunities in Scandinavia, Russia, and Asia within the North-South International Transport Corridor framework.

Freightliner has launched a new daily intermodal service from the Port of Felixstowe to the recently resurrected Tinsley Marshalling Yard, between Sheffi eld and Rotherham in collaboration with the Port of Felixstowe, Freightliner’s new service will operate to and from the Newell & Wright Transport site at Tinsley.

NEW DATES

The TIR system is set to go live in Qatar, just ahead of the country’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With Qatar, fi ve out of six Gulf Cooperation Council member states are now running TIR. The customs bonding system allows goods to be shipped from one country to another in sealed load compartments that are controlled by customs via a multilateral, mutually recognised and UN-backed regime. Qatar customs has launched a training programme in cooperation with the International Road Transport Union to train the agencies involved in the new procedures.

The legal framework for the full digitalisation of the TIR system has entered into force, opening eTIR to 77 countries across fi ve continents. It will allow for completely paperless cross-border transit of goods, under the customs guarantee of the TIR system.

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) is calling on the World Health Organization and national governments to introduce a global mutually recognised digital vaccination certifi cate for commercial truck and coach drivers. Governments need to prioritise commercial drivers in national vaccination programmes, they add. Uncoordinated action by governments, and chaotic COVID-19 testing and vaccination schemes, are endangering drivers and they are still being caught in long queues at makeshiſt roadside test centres, putting them at a higher risk of contracting Covid-19 than in their usual protected working environment in their vehicles.

VIP matching programme

New attractions for 2021:

• Match-making service to connect exhibitors with shippers • Careers focus on day 3 to address the skills gap, recruitment, re/upskilling and education • Freight Forwarders’ Village offering pod exhibiting opportunities from just £950 • Seminars with specific content to the issues of each genre of shipper

IRU has launched a Green Compact for collective global action to achieve carbon neutrality in commercial road transport services by 2050. Decarbonising the sector, comprising more than 65 million heavy-duty vehicles and accounting for approximately 2.5% of global CO2

emissions, is essential to achieve global climate goals, it says. The Compact lays out a clear roadmap to cut CO2

emissions by at least

3 billion tonnes annually. It maps collective action from industry and government on new technology and infrastructure, modifi ed operational practices and better collective services for transport users.

Logistics UK is pressing the Department for Transport to take urgent action to tackle the nationwide shortage of parking spaces for truck drivers, following publication of a Transport Focus report. It found that 56% of respondents rate the availability of spaces for lorries as fairly poor or very poor, reconfi rming “a desperate industry need”, says Logistics UK. It points out that three years ago, the government pledged to increase the availability of secure, safe parking spaces for lorry drivers but has not yet delivered on its promise. It adds that with the industry already needing to fi ll 76,000 driver vacancies, the parking shortage could discourage new entrants from joining the profession.
