Check ventilation systems as temperatures rise
mer temperatures rise. “We’re now starting to see sus- tained higher temperatures, which means pigs will become susceptible to heat stress,” explains Mark Mc- Farland, feed additive product man- ager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition. Heat stress can signifi cantly im- pact productivity levels, with suffering pigs exhibiting irregular feeding behaviour and a loss of appetite, result- ing in lower feed intakes and subse- quently, inconsistent and reduced per- formance.
P Proper ventilation
Carrying out simple maintenance like removing dust and applying grease to moving parts where needed, can make a huge difference to the amount of clean and cool air reaching the pigs, says Mr McFarland.
ig producers should ensure ven- tilation is in good working order to prevent heat stress as sum-
ing, loss in weight and lethargy, and adjust management practices accord- ingly. “Feeding smaller portions regular- ly can help to prevent gorging which can lead to bloat and sudden death. Meals should be available during the cooler parts of the day as pigs will be more likely to empty troughs reduc- ing waste and poor trough hygiene.”
Good ventilation is vital to avoid heat stress, says Mark McFarland (right).
As well as ensuring proper ventilation, it is important producers look out for the signs of heat stress, including pant-
Manufacturers of centrifugal, low volume and portable fans, air tunnels, drive over floors, grain stirrers and gas burners.
We manufacture a range of controls to operate fans, heating, ventilation, temperature alarms and dusk/dawn dimmers. All are designed for agricultural use and are user friendly.

Eating behaviour For those who are experiencing re- duced or varied feed intakes, particu- larly in sows, Mr McFarland advises adding a proven probiotic supplement to the diet. This can help encourage pigs to adapt their eating behaviour to the heat stress conditions. “Ultimately, a combined approach of adapting feeding patterns and making sure environmental factors like venti- lation and drinking water systems are functioning properly will help provide pigs with the best protection against heat stress.” To help producers monitor the like- lihood of heat stress occurring, Lalle- mand are providing free hand-held temperature and humidity monitors while stocks last.
