Reilly added, “will become

Major investments in Canada
The continued quest for North American supply-chain efficiencies has also driven other significant logistics investments and capacity enhancements in recent months. A $115 million connector corridor project in Prince Rupert is now nearly complete and will be fully activated when DP World’s Fairview Terminal expansion is completed in 2022. “ The Fairview-Ridley
Connector Corridor will create new supply chain efficiencies,” said Shaun Stevenson, president and CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority. Also in British Columbia,
Maersk and Canadian Pacific are building a transloading and distribution facility in Vancouver, to be operational later this year. With CP shuttling containers to and from terminals, the aim of the partnership, said Omar Shamsie, president of Maersk Canada,
is
to reduce “multi-modal handoffs” and to promote “inland routing flexibility, better velocity, and cost savings.”
CN announced it invested
$1.3 billion on infrastructure last year in British Columbia, Ontario, Alberta, and Quebec. “These
investments [which
include adding track and sidings] are a key part of our strategy to support growth,” said James Thompson, a CN vice president. I Quebec, a $235 million budget
will also address information technology and positive train control, and, in British Columbia,

Investments in Mexico
Mexico’s port sector represents a
“great area of investment
opportunities,” according to a recent report from Comce, a Mexican trade association. Additional
container terminal
capacity is required in Manzanillo and Mazatlán on the Pacific Coast and in Progreso on the Gulf. The Mexican
government
is investing $198 million for expansion and modernization in Progreso, while a private Mexican group is investing $900 million in Mazatlán. Mexico kicked off a short-sea
shipping route last year that connects Veracruz,
Progreso,
and Puerto Morelos, in Mexico, and Santo Tomás de Castilla,

additional ongoing investments are increasing capacity at the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert. Lynden
Canada invested
in a new facility in Toronto over the last year to help support companies requiring expanded e-commerce services. Online shopping became more important to Canadian consumers during the pandemic, noted Luis Varela, vice president at Lynden Canada, buts some e-commerce platforms limited product they are willing to store in their warehouses. “This shiſt has created an
additional need for warehouse fulfillment and distribution services across Canada,” said Varela. “We’ve been working with many companies that are expanding their e-commerce presence and need to get their products into Canada and ready for distribution. Most do not realize the complexities of navigating USMCA compliance.”

Guatemala. Officials also unveiled plans for a $1.2 billion multimodal logistics center in Nextlalpan, 25 miles north of Mexico City, which will include an industrial park, an airport, and a rail terminal. Cross-gulf services are also
on the increase, with World Direct Shipping recently adding capacity between Port Manatee, Florida, and Mexican ports, including Progreso. A new weekly container service operated by Work Cat between Port Tampa Bay and Brownsville, Texas, near the northeast border of Mexico, began late last year,

to serve both domestic shipping and the U.S.-Mexico trade. “Today’s supply chains are
being stretched and disrupted, transportation capacity is extremely constrained, and shippers are desperate for new capacity,” said Work Cat CEO Hank Hoffman. Those conditions will no doubt
persist, as North American trade continues on its growth trend. Capacity increases to make trade within North America as seamless as possible will need to continue, whether or not the CN-KCS merger is eventually approved.
