Port of Corpus Christi. Port Corpus Christi, the fifth largest port in the US in total tonnage, provides a straight, 45-foot-deep channel and quick access to the Gulf of Mexico and the US inland waterway system. The port has access to overland transportation, with on-site and direct connections to railroads and direct, vessel-to- rail discharge capabilities. Current cargo volumes
are slightly down at Port of Corpus Christi – about a 9% decrease in tonnage for the first quarter – due in part to the Texas Freeze the state experienced earlier this year. “Overall, we are still having
a great quarter thanks to agricultural products and LNG shipments this last quarter,” a port spokesperson said. “Breakbulk cargo is currently up about 46% from this same time last year.” The port’s grain terminal,
managed by ADM (Archer Daniels Midland), continues to loadout approximately two vessels weekly with exported grains. The terminal is enjoying a 168% increase in the current quarter, compared to the same quarter last year. It is also increasing railcar volumes. “Our wind customers
continue to import wind blades with a slight slowdown of 23%,” the spokesperson said. “Wind development projects in Texas are expanding, and we are seeing domestic production of wind components come into our laydown yards by rail and load out for over-the-road transportation to nearby destinations.” The port has improved its
Rincon Industrial Park Open Laydown area. Fifteen acres have been added for open laydown, creating 40 acres overall of open storage. In addition, over 6,000 feet of adjacent track have been added to support rail cargo logistics. Last year, the port added

news, the Port Authority will soon commission the liquid bulk dock 3 terminal to load direct, barge-to-rail of liquid bulk cargo such as refined fuels diesel and gasoline.
Port of Houston. The greater Port of Houston is a 25-mile-long complex comprised of more than 200 private and eight public terminals and is the nation’s largest port for waterborne tonnage. It runs along the 52-mile-long Houston
Ship
Channel, a federal waterway. Activity across Port
Houston’s docks jumped in April, showing growth in both containers and steel due to high regional demand. Container activity increased 25% for the month of April, with 275,840 TEUs compared to April 2020’s 221,540 TEUs. The port also experienced a15% uptick in steel imports in April and 6% year-to-date. “That marks the second month in a row for steel increases, indicating the anticipated rebound in this sector,” said Port Houston Executive Director Roger Guenther. “Bulk cargo also showed strength and with the combined movement of freight across Port Houston public docks, total tonnage for the first quarter is 10.1 M tons, 3% shy of budget.” Import loads were up
more than 20% during Q1, however export container volumes remain soft. Petrochemical products (namely polyethylene and other polymers) drive a large portion of export containers at the port.
