30 DARK SKIES

Updates from the coast team

The Norfolk Coast Partnership staff team are busy on a range of projects this year. Often with partners, we are working on integrated site management; visitor zoning guidance; walk and cycle routes and an active travel plan; protecting and enhancing special characteristics of the area such as our dark skies, seals and biodiversity; and developing education networks. We have an ongoing focus

on addressing the climate crisis, working with art and artists, and a commitment to increasing diversity and understanding of the area. We produce publications such as this, as well as merchandise for sale. We routinely respond to planning applications and consultations. We have gained external

funding to underground overhead power lines; study recreational pressures; develop schemes for farming in a protected landscape; manage visitors with dogs; and audit biodiversity and natural capital. We are applying for additional

funding to plan for a changing coast and the impacts of climate change, and undertake restoration of the Hun and Stiffkey rivers. www.norfolkcoastaonb.org

Celebrating the creatures of the night

This year’s Norfolk Coast and Broads Dark Skies Festival will focus on how nature needs darkness, says Kate Dougan

F

or millennia plants and ani- mals have depended upon the daily cycle of day and night. This natural rhythm determines the waking and sleeping behav- iour of species. Some species have evolved over time to use the dark of the night to feed, migrate, hunt, hide from predators or reproduce. The Norfolk Coast is one of the darkest places in the country. Land- scape completely changes after dark. As our sight is reduced, so we are enabled to tap into our other senses – sniffing, listening, and even our sixth sense of the atmosphere! There will be lots of events both

on and offline during the sixteen- day festival which starts on Sep- tember 25th – check our website at norfolkcoastaonb.org for the latest details. Get out and about and as dark- ness descends:

experience first-

hand the atmosphere of the coast and observe how wildlife use the night at RSPB Titchwell, NWT Cley Marshes or Holkham reserves; take a tour of the universe with Kings Lynn and North Norfolk Astronomy Societies or discover bats with Snet- tisham Parish Council. Online there will be sound walks and podcasts showcasing how the

habitats come alive at night; you could discover how eels use the dark with the Norfolk Rivers Trust and join the University College of Lon- don to explore ponds at night both over and under the water! We will also be looking at poor lighting in its various forms and how this can adversely affect wild- life by upsetting their natural behaviour. Crucially we will show how we can reverse light pollu- tion on the Norfolk Coast – some- thing that we can all help to do, to preserve the dark skies and land- scapes of the Norfolk Coast, and the rural character and tranquillity of the coast which we all love.

Kate Dougan is Norfolk Coast Partnership project adviser and lead organiser of the festival.
