Longest chalk reef a special home


Much of the sea bed off the east coast of England consists of sediments – sand, shingle and mud – and these are important habitats for marine wildlife. But at low tide on the coast between Weybourne and Cromer, you can see a hint of something different. Here lies the edge of a large reef of chalk and flint ‘cobbles’, which extends many kilometres offshore and to the east as far as offshore from Happisburgh.

water conditions are probably the best ways to experience fully the wonders of the reef, which from 200 metres offshore has been designated as a Marine Conservation Zone.
