ADVOCACY SPOTLIGHT

ASCA advocated for resump- tion of elective surgeries during the COVID-19 public health emergency as soon as possible after the lock- down was enacted and made valu- able pandemic-related financial relief programs, including the Pay- check Protection Program, the Pro- vider Relief Fund, and Accelerated and Advance Payments, available to ASCs. We also worked for the con- tinued suspension of the 2 percent Medicare payment cuts that are tied to sequestration. Following years of ASCA advocacy for greater expan- sion of the ASC Covered Procedures List, Medicare finalized a change to the ASC Conditions for Coverage that made 267 procedures eligible for payment in ASCs.

Q How do you get your physicians and administrators

involved in advocacy efforts? AS: It is our duty as the Government Affairs Committee to ensure advo- cacy remains at the core of our focus, both at the state and federal level. We are constantly working to keep the industry and government offi- cials updated on the efforts of ASCA and state organizations at all times. The Government Affairs Committee makes a consistent effort to promote participation amongst all ASCs in the ASCAPAC.

Q What is one piece of advice that you would give to ASCs

when it comes to advocacy? AS: When you focus on quality, the rest will organically follow. Qual- ity is at the forefront of our advo- cacy efforts and is a topic we work to promote across the ASC and phy- sician communities. The value proposition and quality

care of ASCs need to be made evident, and we all must advocate on behalf of

— Annie Sariego, RN, CASC Physicians Endoscopy (PE) GI Solutions

ASCs through educational outlets, con- versations, research and networking. I am passionate about promoting the value add of ASCs to legislators

at the state and federal levels, hospi- tal systems, and PE GI Solutions part- nering centers’ staff. My advice for anyone in the community would be to help convey the importance of partici- pation and awareness to all involved stakeholders and audiences.

Q Is there anything ASCA could do better to encourage ASCs

to advocate? AS: The Government Affairs Commit- tee is working on new communica- tion tools to provide quarterly updates to physicians on the work that ASCA does. Educating physicians on the importance of our advocacy efforts is crucial for the growth and continuation of our advocacy.
