OFFSHORE WIND FARMS & RENEWABLES
Glamox Supplies LED Lighting for World’s Largest Floating Offshore Wind Farm
Global LED lighting specialist Glamox has been awarded a contract to supply LED lighting for the wind turbine foundations at Hywind Tampen, the world’s first and largest floating offshore wind power plant. Hywind Tampen is also the world’s first wind farm to power offshore oil and gas platforms.
Scheduled to be commissioned in late 2022, Hywind Tampen will be located 140km off the coast of Norway between the Snorre and Gullfaks oil and gas platforms, in water depths of up to 300 metres. A collaborative project between Siemens Gamesa and Norwegian company Equinor, the wind farm is equipped with 11 Siemens Gamesa direct drive wind turbines (total capacity 88MW) that will be capable of supplying around 35 per cent of the annual power demand of the two oil and gas platforms. By reducing the use of gas turbines on the fields, Hywind Tampen will help cut CO2 emissions by more than 200,000 tonnes per year.
Aker Solutions is the Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor for Hywind Tampen. The project scope includes the supply of 11 floating concrete hulls that will support each wind turbine. As part of this scope of supply, Glamox will provide two different marine lighting products for the floating concrete hulls: FL60 LED floodlights and the MIR LED linear luminaires.
The FL60 LED floodlights are marine- certified, single-module versions that offer a virtually maintenance-free lighting solution for demanding applications. The FL60 is protected by a seawater- resistant, anodised aluminium housing.

The MIR LED is a high quality linear light fitting in 316L stainless steel that is certified for marine use. The light fitting can be installed in a variety of different areas, both indoors and outdoors, on wind turbines and marine vessels.
Jan Buttle-Ulvin, Sales Director and Head Energy Segments at Glamox commented: “Offshore wind farms continue to grow larger. New offshore wind farms under construction are also moving further from the shore and are being positioned in increased water depths. With this comes the difficulty of maintenance. With continuous exposure to salt, wind, vibration and water, offshore wind farms represent a challenging environment for lighting. For these installations, Glamox can draw on its expertise in lighting solutions for marine applications, which will play a vital role in wind farm operations and maintenance work.
Glamox lighting complies with all the marine and offshore standards and our luminaires, in either 316 stainless steel or seawater-resistant aluminium, are the preferred choice of materials for these extremely harsh environments.”
Last year, in 2020, Glamox was awarded two new major offshore wind contracts for the Hollandse Kust project and the world's largest offshore wind farm at Dogger Bank, respectively. The project awards clearly demonstrate Glamox position as a preferred supplier in the market for marine lighting in the offshore wind industry.
