NegOr to get more

Negros Oriental expects to receive additional coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines once the national government delivers a fresh supply to the region. Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, chief pathologist of the Department of Health in Region 7, made this announcement last Tuesday. The assurance came as the

province’s inoculation program slowed down due to the low supply of vaccines.

Loreche, who is also the DOH- 7 spokesperson on Covid-19, told the Philippine News Agency in a phone interview that it has been almost two weeks since the region last received Covid-19 vaccines. “We really are reliant upon the national government to give us our share of the vaccines but definitely these will be properly allocated to the Central Visayas provinces,” she said in a mix of English and Cebuano dialect. DOH-7 received the last batch of vaccines on April 14.

“The National Vaccination Operations Center are the ones to compute that and cascade it to the regional and that’s the time that the region will send the allocations to the provinces,” Loreche said.

Daily COVID tally hits record high

The daily number of new COVID cases in Negros Oriental hit a record high of 53 cases last Wednesday, April 28, since the pandemic began last year.

Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, Covid-19 incident commander of the Province’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, said in a virtual presser the rise in cases in some municipalities is mostly due to local or community transmission.

She said Wednesday’s announcement of 93 new cases was actually a combination of Tuesday’s 40 cases and Wednesday’s 53 cases. Thursday’s new cases tally went down to 26. But Estacion said the reopening of some areas in the province to domestic tourists is not the reason for the spike in local coronavirus disease 2019 cases. A

“In the case of Dauin, it started with a church choir member, whose family members were also infected, as well as other contacts,” she said in a mix of English and Cebuano dialect. The sudden rise in COVID-

19 cases in Dauin has prompted town officials to institute localized lockdowns and issue a statement early this week to allay public fear and prevent false information circulating on social media platforms.

Dauin Mayor Galicano Truita said only households within 50 meters from a household with a COVID-positive individual will be placed on lockdown.
