SUSTAINABLE TOURISM 2021 THE GUIDE

Moulin de la Jarousse Quite the selection of tree houses and cabins are available at this lakeside site a few kilometres south of Limoges. One is Bollywood-themed, another is reached by a 42m rope bridge and decorated with Japanese furniture. One cabin sits above the lake on stilts. Ten metres up in the canopy, and accessed by rope bridges, there’s also a tiny glass pod which gives guests “the sensation of being at one with unspoilt nature, in the treetops”. There’s even a spherical two-person “love nest” hanging high in a rope net. www.cabane-en-perigord.com

Cap Cabane

Deep in the forests of the Landes, this campsite offers 13 pine cone-shaped wooden tree

La Jaurie

Marcel and Madelinde run this eco-friendly campsite,

houses. Each has a transparent roof so you can gaze at the stars as you drift off to sleep. There’s also a natural swimming pool. www.capcabane.com

Domaine de la Male

“Our tree houses are designed in perfect harmony with nature, using quality wooden materials. There’s Douglas fir for the cladding, larch for the interiors, oak on the floors and sheep’s wool for insulation.” The two tree houses at this site near Montauban sound divine. There are kingsize beds, spa baths on the outdoor decking and great views across the stunning Quercy countryside. www.domainedelamale.fr

“OVERLOOKING A MEANDERING RIVER, LA JAURIE OFFERS BEEHIVES, CHICKENS AND A FRIENDLY DONKEY”

southwest of Limoges. On a hillside, overlooking a meandering river, it offers beehives, walnut trees, free-roaming chickens, a friendly donkey, home-grown farm produce, a solar-powered cooker and a salt-water swimming pool. Perfect “if you like your camping accompanied by the sound of cowbells and an eco-conscience ethos”, as the owners say. www.lajaurie.com

Château de Monfréville If you’ve always fancied staying at (or at least next to) a château, but you still want to

keep your carbon footprint low, this might be the answer. Take the ferry to Cherbourg (much greener than flying) and then hop on a very brief train ride to Carentan, which is just a few clicks from Monfréville. Here you’ll find a natural swimming pond, an honesty shop stocked with home-grown organic vegetables, and a very relaxing atmosphere. Originally commissioned by William the Conqueror, in the past the château has hosted Walt Disney’s family and occupying German soldiers. Nowadays it’s home to Bert the donkey. “July and August mornings ❯❯
