BRING A GLINT OF SPARKLY COLOUR TO VALENTINE’S DAY

Choosing a coloured gemstone makes for an exciting, different and beautiful adornment for an engagement ring

24

If you’re thinking of making this Valentine’s Day extra special with a ring for your partner, you can’t go far wrong with a beautiful diamond. They are a wonderful choice – not only are they bright and scintillating but also hardwearing and suitable for everyday use – however, there is another ‘on trend’ option you might have overlooked; a coloured gemstone.

A FANCY SAPPHIRE That doesn’t exclude diamonds of course, they are available in many colours. But there is a range of gorgeous coloured gemstones you could consider. How about a blue sapphire?

Or a ‘fancy sapphire’ which can come in any colour, except red. Both ruby and sapphire are from the same variety of gemstone known as corundum.

Other gemstones also come in multiple colours. You could choose a tourmaline, spinel, garnet or topaz. Then there’s aquamarine, which is a soft pale blue colour, which comes from the same family of gemstones as emeralds.

A GIFT FROM THE SUN Stuck for choice? Pantone has been nominating a colour of the year for the last two decades and for 2021, it’s the turn of two colours; grey and yellow. While grey sounds a bit…well, grey, there are some grey gemstones that are beautiful, such as spinel. But if you fancied something a little brighter and wanted to go for yellow you could try diamond, sapphire, tourmaline, garnet, citrine or topaz.

Another yellow option would be a Heliodor. Named after the Greek words for ‘sun’ and ‘gift’, a Heliodor is quite literally a gift from the sun.

Of course, not every gemstone is suitable for everyday wear so make sure you pick wisely. You need a combination of hardness, toughness and stability to resist scratches, breaking and exposure to chemicals and temperature. Look for coloured gemstones that are above a seven on the Mohs Hardness Scale which should mean they are suitable enough to be worn everyday as an engagement ring.

LIKE THE IDEA OF A COLOURED GEMSTONE? Martin & Co can help you refine your choice with its own gemmologist on hand to help you find the perfect, coloured gemstone.
