LOS T WORCE S T E R THE CI T YS HI S TORIC PAS T

Situated on the banks of the River Severn, Worcester is no doubt a beautiful city with its magnificent cathedral at its heart and impressive Victorian and Edwardian buildings. But like many historic places, much of its past has been lost, not least some of its stunning architecture both in the city centre and in its outlying areas.

Local historian and author Ray Jones hopes to show people a hint of what has gone before in his latest pictorial book Lost Worcester, published last month.

He takes us on a fascinating journey over more than 100 years, showing what the city has lost, including buildings, industry and a forgotten way of life.

The book takes the reader around the city centre, looking at formerly important industries such as porcelain and the mail order empire Kays as well as sport and leisure, before heading into the suburbs where many former fine houses have been lost to development.

Author Ray Jones said: “Compiling this book has prompted me to consider many aspects of loss. The loss of the closely knit and poor-quality housing, embracing teeming and insanitary courts, was clearly desirable. The loss of traditional industries is often lamented but working conditions in many of the old factories of Worcester would undoubtedly have shortened lives.

“In terms of the local environment it seems unfortunate that many of the large historic houses that encircled the city centre (such as St Catharine’s Hill, the Blanquettes and Barbourne Lawn) were demolished as their extensive grounds were deemed so suitable for new housing developments.”

The book is produced by Amberley, priced £14.39 visit www.amberley-books.com
