MPs warn of critical shortage in veterinary inspectors

M

Ps have warned of a vet short- age following the end of free movement to the UK from

the European Union. The House of Commons Environ-

ment Food and Rural Affairs select com- mittee highlighted the issue following an inquiry into labour in the food sup- ply chain. More vets are needed due to additional veterinary certifi cation re- quirements following the Brexit tran- sition period.

Overseas-trained vets had an im- portant role working as offi cial veter- inarians in the UK, said the commit- tee. They were an important part of the food supply chain, in this case working as inspectors in abattoirs that were un- attractive to UK-trained vets. “Offi cial veterinarians face an in-

crease in their workload due to in- creased checks on exports as a result

of Brexit. These factors – and the vet- erinary training required, risk a situ- ation where there is insuffi cient vet- erinary labour, without which animal products cannot be cleared for export.” The British Veterinary Association

gave evidence to the committee last au- tumn. It also released a report warning of a “triple whammy” facing the veteri- nary sector due to Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic and the threat of disease out- breaks such as avian infl uenza. BVA president James Russell said:

“BVA has been raising concerns about the impact of Brexit on veterinary ca- pacity since the referendum. The shortage of overseas vets could impact the UK livestock sector

ply chain and facilitating internation- al trade in a way that protects animal health and welfare and public health. “It has long been known that the UK veterinary profession relies heavily on EU-trained vets, particularly in public health roles, and it is vital that immi- gration policies refl ect that fact.”
