THE RHÔNE-ALPES region is synonymous with holidays at altitude but you don't always need your skis to enjoy the wild wonders of this corner of France. In summer, ski resorts shift their focus and those who love the outdoor life flock to the flowery meadows and grassy slopes for hiking and VTT mountain biking. The Rhône-Alpes also boasts lots of lakes; great both for watersports and a refreshing cool-off. The greats like Lake Geneva and Lake Annecy fall into this area and are wonderful areas for campers to enjoy a summer break. Its three main cities are Lyon, St Etienne and Grenoble, with the former ruling the roost in terms of gastronomic excellence. And the region has numerous famous sites on its roster, from the natural wonder of the Pont d’Arc (Ardèche) to the Chamonix glacier and the spa towns of Evian and Thonon, not forgetting the Cotes du Rhône vineyards from Vienne to Tournon.
