Pays de la Loire
Not to be confused with neighbouring Centre-Val de Loire, this charming region has a character all of its own
BOTH REGIONS sit under the 'Loire Valley' umbrella but PAYS DE LA LOIRE and Centre-Val de Loire have very different offerings for visitors. The more westerly Pays de la Loire is a unique province of lush vineyards, swanky seaside resorts, historic nooks and offbeat attractions, making it a great family destination. Each of its departements has much to offer: Loire- Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe and Vendée.
Its cool and arty capital, Nantes, was once the capital of the Duchy of Brittany, and its Breton legacy lives on in the splendid Château des Ducs de Bretagne, which still rises imperiously over the old town. The city-wide Voyage à Nantes art trail and giant mechanical elephant attract tens of thousands of curious visitors each year, as does the Pays de la Loire's award- winning Puy du Fou in Vendée. Bringing history to life is the name of the game at this epic amusement park. The Pays de la Loire is also home to the 24 Hours of Le
Mans car race, held since 1923 at the Sarthe track. Enjoy a wine-tasting? The Val de Loire Wine Route
covers 40,000 hectares, – sniff and swig some Saumur Brut, Savennières or Coteaux du Layon. ■
