(RAP) for high school students: This programallows high school students to earn credits toward an apprenticeship programand a high school diploma at the same time. For Apprentices and Journeypersons As an apprentice, you accumulate


hours on the job and advance through technical training until you have mastered your trade.When you have completed your apprenticeship training requirements, you become an Alberta- certified journeyperson. Are you a journeyperson who wants to


move fromAlberta to another province or country or fromanother province or country to Alberta? If so, you’ll want to knowabout these


programs: • Red Seal Program: This


interprovincial standards program makes it easier for skilled workers to move and work across Canada. • Apprenticeship and Labour


Mobility: This multi-level initiative helps ensure that qualified, skilled Canadian workers can practise their respective trades across Canada. What is Apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a post-secondary


education programconsisting of on- the-job training provided by your


pprenticeship is a training programthat combines on-the- job training, work experience and technical training in a


employer and technical training at an approved technical training provider. Approximately 80 per cent of an


apprentice’s training is done “on the job.” Training is provided by the employer, with the apprentice learning froma certified journeyperson or qualified individual and is measured in hours and months. Approximately 20 per cent of an


apprentice’s training is completed through an approved technical training provider—usually a college or post- secondary institution. To progress, apprentices are required


to successfully complete the technical training period and the industry examination(s), in addition to completing the hours andmonths of on-the-job training required for each period of the apprenticeship program. An Alberta Journeyman Certificate is


awarded when an apprentice has satisfied all of the requirements of the program. Eligibility Requirements for an


Apprenticeship Program To enter an apprenticeship training


contract in a trade: • you must be a Canadian citizen or


permanent resident of Canada and be eligible to enter an Alberta post- secondary programin Alberta**, • you must find an employer who is


willing and able to hire you as an apprentice and provide the required on- the-job training, and • your apprenticeship contract must


be registered with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. If you are not a Canadian citizen or


permanent resident of Canada, you will require a work permit and a study permit valid for the entire length of the apprenticeship program. Alberta apprenticeship programs consist of on- the-job training and technical training, requiring apprentices to be eligible to work and study full time for up to four years. For questions regarding eligibility, please call the AIT Information Line at 1-800-248-4823. ** International students are not eligible to become an Alberta apprentice because both a work and study permit are required for the same time period, covering the entire length of the apprenticeship program.
