facilities. These centers are meant for patients who are stable and do not need intensive monitoring or hospital-level care but—because of distance, travel limitations, lack of a caregiver at home or more time needed to manage pain or bodily functions—might not be able to go home the same day as a procedure or visit to an emergency facility. A few states already regulate these kinds of facilities and design guidance is needed.

Development of Guidelines for Emergency Conditions FGI has received numerous requests for guidance on setting up tempo- rary facilities and adapting existing facilities in response to the COVID- 19 pandemic. In response, it has con- vened a special committee to assem-

ble design guidance for facilities during emergency situations caused by weather, pandemics, wildfires and other emergency situations. The committee is responsible for creating a white paper with draft requirements and lessons learned from past local and national emergen- cies such as COVID-19. This white paper will become the basis for new guidelines on the design of facilities that can readily be adapted during emergency conditions.

FGI is an independent, not-for-

profit organization dedicated to devel- oping guidance for the planning, design and construction of hospitals, outpatient facilities and residential health, care and support facilities. FGI appoints the members of the HGRC,
