Nature Recovery Plan

INTRODUCE NEW LEGISLATION TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE, LOW-IMPACT FISHING A paradigm shift in fisheries management is urgently needed. Legislation should adopt a broader ecosystem approach that ends overfishing, minimises damage to non-target species and habitats, and leads to a recovery in the health of marine ecosystems.
INCLUDE A SCOTTISH NATURE NETWORK IN THE NATIONAL PLANNING FRAMEWORK Connectivity between habitats is key to supporting nature’s recovery. We must transform the way we use land in between nature sites to allow wildlife to disperse and thrive, and do so on a national scale.

TRANSFORM SCOTTISH AGRICULTURAL POLICY Farming today has many environmental impacts and current policy does very little to encourage sustainable practice. While there are many good examples of wildlife-friendly farming, this must become the norm, with delivery of environmental benefits rewarded.
11
IMPLEMENT LICENSING OF DRIVEN GROUSE SHOOTING Requiring that certain grouse moor management standards are met through a licensing regime would help to reduce illegal raptor persecution, regulate the culling of mountain hares and enhance the carbon storage potential of moorlands.
END BURNING ON PEATLAND AND THE COMMERCIAL EXTRACTION AND SALE OF PEAT FOR HORTICULTURE As one of the world’s most peatland-rich nations, Scotland is in a strong position to show leadership by recognising the role of peatlands in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises, and by investing in their restoration, protection and sustainable management.
COMMIT TO AT LEAST 30% OF SCOTLAND’S SEAS BEING HIGHLY PROTECTED While 30% of Scotland’s seas are now protected, many sites are not being adequately managed. To reverse the loss of marine biodiversity, this area must be expanded and sufficiently protected by producing and implementing effective management plans.
