October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month and nowhere is this more celebrated than at the Worcestershire Breast Unit, based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Back in 2009, consultant breast surgeon Stephen Thrush led a county wide fund-raising campaign to create the unit, the services of which so many women, and men, benefit from today.

In seven years, a staggering £1.8 million was raised to achieve the conversion of the NHS Acute Trust Building which was the reality of Stephen Thrush’s vision.

Thanks to the incredible tenacity and generosity of the people of Worcestershire who tirelessly raised funds and kept faith in the dream during some very tough times, the build was completed in February 2016 and welcomed its first patients through the doors.

He explained: “The unit is all about creating the best possible environment for the care of the individual. It’s not just about offering the best clinical treatment but the unit considers how individuals want to be seen and treated and that includes everything from ease of parking to the seating areas and access to drinks. We want to ensure what can be a very traumatic experience for some people is made the most hospitable we can.”

Working in a more relaxing and less clinical environment (the unit is surrounded by woodland and well-tended gardens) also has a knock-on benefit for the staff too who Stephen says really

enjoy working there.

As well as the expected diagnostic work for those suspected of having breast cancer, the unit offers a whole host of other services which is what makes it stand out. There is a prosthetic fitting room with displays of bras and swimwear, there are counselling services and working with the Haven charity a range of complementary care such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, dietary advice for optimum well-being and tattooing is also on offer, over and above what the NHS can offer.
