Steel, glass and timber construction works really well with Dutch barns. If they are mixed together in large panels the heavy ‘bulk’ of the building is reduced visually. Avoid using masonry infill panels, leave that for traditional farm buildings, Dutch barns are all about lightweight metal and timber construction.

Of course these are only brief notes and we have much more brilliant information on converting your Dutch Barn in our fantastic e-books. Download a FREE introduction here: https://www.thomasstudio.co.uk/dutch-barn-conversion-to- get-planning-permission/

DESIGN DIRECTION Using the aesthetics of the original building and materials retains its character and integrity. Older steel frames will usually be made out of railway track for posts and angle iron riveted together for the bow-string curved trusses, how beautiful. But make sure these are positioned externally – read our e-book to understand why.

Dutch barns are usually not tall enough for high ceilings, so why not flip the living space to the first floor, taking advantage of the views, and put the bedrooms below, where they’ll also be cooler and darker.

Timber-framed Dutch barns are rare, as they mostly rot away. Those that still stand make excellent conversions as they are thermally efficient, giving you energy-saving perks. This is especially useful if you’re favouring an open plan design, which is often most desirable in these longer narrow structures.

Garry Thomas is an expert in obtaining planning for Dutch barns, creating unique properties and ‘golden years’ homes for elderly parents.
