KNOW WHAT YOUR JEWELLERY IS WORTH?

– understanding the true value will ensure peace of mind that your valuables are covered

Imagine inheriting a ring that, after having it professionally valued, turned out to be a tanzanite and diamond ring worth many times more than your own estimate of its value. That was one customer’s experience after taking their ring to be valued by Martin & Co’s Registered Valuer – Amanda Attwood.

“There were certainly some tears when they realised its value,” said Amanda, who has nearly 30 years’ experience in working and valuing jewellery. “People often don’t realise that while their jewellery might have huge sentimental value, inherited pieces can also surprise when it comes to their financial worth.”

Properly insured? But getting a professional valuation is not just about having a lovely surprise. There are practical purposes too. “It’s important to ensure that jewellery – new or old – is adequately insured under your household insurance. Insurers increasingly want to see a valuation document as proof that you owned the item and what it would cost to replace. The valuation document is detailed and includes a photo as well as a comprehensive description and assessment of the item’s condition.” Insurers often require a fresh valuation to be carried out every three or four years to reflect how pieces can change in value. It’s not just for insurance that knowing the true value of jewellery items is crucial either. “A professional valuation is also important for probate, confirmation of will (in Scotland) and other legal purposes like divorce settlements,” says Amanda.

A fixed cost for valuation Martin & Co offers independent professional valuations with a fixed cost for the setting up of a valuation document and the first item, and then an additional fixed cost for each piece added to the document. “Customers can bring their jewellery into the shop or we can go to their home,” says Amanda, “and we will also clean and check the condition of each piece. Where necessary we can quote a price to fix and renovate.” And the age of a piece is no barrier adds Amanda. “The oldest piece of silver I’ve ever valued was a 16th century Elizabethan silver chalice. It can take a nimble piece of detective work to get to the bottom of how much a rare item like that is worth.”
