The American Trucking Associations and the Louisiana Motor Transport Association

praise Governor John Bel Edwards for

announcing he will sign into law the Civil Justice Reform Act of 2020, which cleared the Louisiana State Legislature last night in its final day of special session. The trucking industry has called tort reform its number one priority at the federal and state levels, as a pervasive climate of lawsuit abuse has sent insurance rates skyrocketing, forcing motor carriers out of business and hampering the industry’s ability to safely and efficiently move the economy’s freight.

In response to heavy customer demand, DHL Global Forwarding, the freight forwarding specialist of Deutsche Post DHL Group, introduced two new block train connections from Germany to China at the end of May. A new connection serving from the KTL terminal on the BASF site in Ludwigshafen travels via Poland, Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan to the destination terminal in Xi’an, the capital of the Chinese province Shaanxi. In addition, an express train connection has been deployed between Neuss and Xi’an via Kaliningrad reducing the transit time to 12 days.

American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index contracted 1% in May aſter falling 10.3% in April. In May, the index equaled 106.1 (2015=100) compared with 107.2 in April. “While tonnage fell in May, even though other economic indicators like retail sales and housing starts rose, I’m not overly concerned,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “First, while down over 10% sequentially in April, truck tonnage did not fall as much as other economic indicators that month. This means that any rebound is tougher since tonnage didn’t fall substantially to begin with. Second, there are indications that freight continues to improve as more and more states and localities liſt lockdown restrictions.” CSX Corp. announces that James L. Wainscott has been appointed to the company’s board of directors, effective immediately.
