M4 is still Wales’ sticking-point
Congestion on the M4 in Wales remains one of the region’s biggest headaches, says Freight Transport Association (FTA) acting head of policy, Mags Simpson. “The M4 has always
been a hotspot, and if anything happens on it, there is always chaos,” she says. Plans to build a motorway
bypass for the congested Brynglas Tunnel stretch of
the M4 have been dragging on for years, but are currently in abeyance as the Welsh Government is reluctant to build a major road through an environmentally sensitive area.
Simpson adds: “The M4 is a vital route in/out of Wales. Members were disappointed that work will not be going ahead.” Congestion on the M4 has if anything worsened lately
as result of the axing of tolls on the Severn Bridge between England and South Wales. While this is something that FTA campaigned for, and its truck operating members certainly appreciate not having to pay £20 or so each time they cross into England, it has at the same time encouraged car commuters

improve the A465 which runs along the heads of the South Wales Valleys and ends in the Swansea area but that would be a massive engineering project, says Simpson. A
