Ireland gets fi rst US liner service in decades

Ireland has gained its fi rst direct container link to the US in many years with the launch of a new ICL service between Cork and the US East Coast. The new route was launched

with the sailing of the Independent Vision on 6 June and will depart the Irish port every Saturday, arriving in the US 10 days later.

Cork’s chief executive

Brendan Keating said: “The timing is perfect, with the opening of our new €80 million Cork Container Terminal in Ringaskiddy on the horizon, and has the potential to grow cargo volumes from and to Ireland. This is a fantastic strategic development for the port.” ICL chief executive John

Kirkland added: “Ireland is a market we have been keen to develop for a while and we sincerely hope the Irish trade support this commitment by ICL, to bring Ireland its fi rst direct weekly service to the USA East Coast. We look forward to working with the Port of Cork with their exciting expansion plans.”
