Port comes to the rescue of slippery customers

The Port of Gothenburg recently found time to rescue 150 eels trapped by the construction of the huge new Arendal terminal. The 220,000sq m site includes a small cove which has been sealed off and will be gradually fi lled with rock and dredge material. The rare, protected European

eels had to be removed before the work could start and it emerged that there were far more of them in the lagoon than anyone realised. Project manager Joakim

Grenmarker explained: “We hadn’t expected to fi nd any eels at all and discovering 150 so close

to where we are working was a surprise, particularly in the light of the fact that construction of the terminal has been in progress for quite a while. Having said that, the eels don’t seem to have been too bothered by what has been going on around them.” Perhaps it’s as well that the

Anguilla Anguilla (as they are offi cially called) don’t know that their species is under serious threat, with only 5% of their 1950 number still remaining.

A piece of cake for Woodland winner

Woodland Group’s Katie-Louise Thompson-Friend carried off the fi rst prize in BIFA’s Young Forwarder Network online ‘Bake Off ’ on 27 May, beating off strong competition with this 100% edible depiction of a dustcart (we think) carrying the forwarder’s livery and logo. Runners-up were Kasia

Kowalska-Trela of DSV Air & Sea and Katie Yewdall from Ligentia. One problem that technology

has not been able to crack so far is stimulating taste-buds, so the BIFA Bake Off entrants were judged on the look of their creations. Judges Kyle Lawrence, customer care operator at Unsworth, Brooke Jennings, part of the forwarding team at Burhill Logistics and BIFA’s

Graeme Wilkinson shortlisted their top two, and using a Zoom poll, all 21 participants voted for the overall winner. The event was based on the

popular TV programme, which has caused a nationwide shortage of

vital ingredients, including fl our, as the housebound population seeks to replicate what they see on their screens. BIFA’s Bake Off was the fi rst of

many upcoming online events for the trade association’s Young Forwarder Network. Training development manager, Carl Hobbis, comments: “Initially, we were obviously mindful that businesses – including ourselves – have had many new challenges due to Covid-19, and more pressing priorities. But the development of BIFA’s YFN continues to be of great importance, and via

the

use of video conferencing online, members of the regional groups will be able to interact with one another.”
