letter from publisher We Are All Grieving
Grief, in all its various stages, is here. I can see it in the tired eyes of the people in the grocery store, peeking out from above the masks that hide their pursed lips and troubled voices. I can feel it in my chest, sometimes in my throat, and it overtakes me at the oddest moments and in the weirdest places. Sometimes it fl ows out of me like a river, other times it trickles out like a slow leaky faucet. But it is here, it’s with me and it’s probably with you, too. Elizabeth Kubler Ross and David Kessler initially
described the fi ve stages of grief as denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I have traveled freely through all fi ve stages and not necessarily in that order. We see this being played out in real time in our communities—with fully armed protestors threaten- ing state governments to reopen (anger); folks openly fl outing the mask rules (denial); in- creased addiction and domestic abuse (depression and anger); local governments pleading with their communities to stay in, while giving them some nuggets of normalcy (bargain- ing); and the essential employees who never had a choice (acceptance). I wish there was a cure-all for working with grief, but therein lies the rub: Everyone
is diff erent and what might work for one person may not work for another. T ere is some conventional wisdom that says that counseling, meditation and mindfulness, exercise, good sleep, self-care and eating healthy food work in tandem to activate the parasympa- thetic nervous system and enable our bodies to better handle the physical and emotional stress that comes with grief. As always, Natural Awakenings has you covered. Check out our articles this month
on feel-good foods and ways to work out at home using what you have on hand. Together, we can get through anything.
Blessings and stay well,
