documentation. To stay current on what documentation is necessary to get maximum reimbursements requires ongoing education. And that education must be timely and continuous because requirements change rapidly. Documentation turns into the code that gets an ASC paid. Therefore, if documentation is lacking or inaccu- rate, an ASC will not be paid enough or at all. Providing examples of good and bad documentation can help educate physicians on what they need to do to maximize payments. While pre-made checklists are a good starting point, doc- umentation is more complicated than a basic list because every case is different. set aside time to educate physicians on reporting requirements.

Partnering for Success Having an expert revenue cycle team in place to monitor and manage billing pro- cesses makes success more likely. Having meaningful data to make

informed recommendations to influence key stakeholders requires diligence. The process of gathering and analyzing data

and then providing data in a meaningful way with suggestions to make improve- ments is a time-consuming specialty within itself. To be successful requires a significant investment in revenue cycle training, including staff cross-training. For centers lacking onsite expertise, outsourcing could make the difference between failure and a profitable business. Because they work with many other ASCs, an outsourced billing provider has a level of experience and the key metrics that are difficult to match in-house. Their knowledge of best practices will allow the revenue cycle team to create immediate positive changes with minimal implementation time and effort.
