MESSAGE FROM THE CEO News You Can Use A

s I write this column, we are in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. ASCA continues to work with the Trump administration and Con-

gress to ensure ASCs can fully support COVID-19 response efforts across the country.

By the time you receive this magazine in the mail, you will have

received a tremendous amount of information from ASCA via email and our website on our COVID-19 response, the services that ASCs can pro- vide to their community in this crisis and our advocacy efforts. The goal of ASCA’s advocacy is to ensure that ASCs have access to economic relief from the government to recover from adhering to guidance to postpone elective surgeries and be able to continue to provide safe, high-quality care to their patients after the pandemic. Make sure to visit ASCA’s COVID-19 Resource Center at ascassociation.org/covid-19 to keep abreast of this very volatile situation. At press time, many ASCs have temporarily shut down to comply with their state’s stay-at-home order. Turn to page 16, to read an article on what these ASCs are doing to help their healthcare community. On page 14, read about how to safely use drugs that the US Food & Drug Administration has marked for extended use to meet the COVID-19 demand. Other than COVID-19 coverage, this issue offers its regular departments and the usual selection of meaningful articles. Turn to page 8 to learn how to adopt a reprocessing initiative to cut supply costs and help the environment. The cover story on page 10 discusses the ANSI/AAMI ST 79 medical instrumentation standards. Central processing has become more high-tech and ST 79 is a source of proven practices that ASCs can follow to keep their patients and staff safe. “Green Your OR” on page 18 discusses how to turn your operating room

waste into opportunity through recycling and the use of eco-friendly products. The Doing Business column on page 22 examines how to maximize

the value of your end-of-month reports and improve your center’s revenue cycle management efforts.

“Embrace Change” on page 42 discusses adding innovative procedures Seeking Authors

ASC Focus is seeking the contribution of articles by guest authors. If you have the expertise and time to write for us, we’d be interested in hearing from you.

Please see our editorial guidelines at ascfocus.org/about and submit your story proposal to smukerji@ascassociation.org.

to the ASC setting. I hope you can take the information in these articles and use them in your ASC to bring about positive change. As always, please do not hesitate to con- tact me if you would like to see any particular topic covered in this magazine. Stay safe.
