Reckitt Benckiser Group, the consumer goods company headquartered in Slough, was one of the very few Thames Valley-based quoted businesses to see its share price rise during March. After the coronavirus snatched all the headlines, the stock market plummeted – as did most of the UK company shares.

The measures of success
There will be three pillars by which the success of businesses will be measured in the future. To date the key and, in some cases, sole measure of success for business has been profit. That is no longer valid. What this experience has taught us is that there will be two other pillars of success. They are people and the planet. How businesses treat, engage with and make a positive difference to human beings will be valued. It’s vital to invest in the development and careers of your employees. How businesses care for the environment will take on greater relevance. Support your communities and show you care about the world around us. The clearer air, the loss of smog in cities across the world show what can be achieved, and businesses should each play their part in creating an enduring legacy to this issue. Technology can and will play a key part in this aspect. These three “P”s of People, Planet and Profit need to be at the forefront of the minds of business leaders when they consider their fourth “P”, Purpose.

The Reckitt group, a producer of health, hygiene and home products, managed a 7% price rise. Its annual report for 2019 shows revenues of £12.8 billion, 61% coming from health products, and reported overall growth of 2%. Star performance of the month was the 18% rise by Catenae Innovation, owner of Oxford Broadcasting. Originally a cross-media proprietor with holdings in radio, publishing and television, it now focuses on the digital media and technology sector, finding “solutions that solve commercial challenges and create opportunities for our clients”.
Only two other companies from the region recorded plus figures – Middlesex- based Ultra Electronics, a systems provider operating across defence, security, critical detection and control markets, and Basingstoke-based Genus which produces superior breeding livestock through genetic improvement.
Spare a thought for investors in Maidenhead construction and engineering group Costain, which saw shares drop 79% from 166p to 35p.
