Lincoln in Shelby County
While a circuit riding attorney, Lincoln could be found in Shelbyville practicing his trade, mixing with friends, and eventually becoming the man who would become the 16th Presi- dent. Some even say that his political beginnings as a Republican can be found here.
Visit the Shelby County Courthouse to see the painting of the Lincoln-Thornton Debate. Wile everyone may have heard of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, this debate was earlier and was Lincoln’s fist public speaking engagement as a Republican, and he also touches some of the anti-slavery notions that would become so important later on.
Shelby County has SEVEN wayside exhibits as part of the Looking for Lincoln Story Trail that help explain our part in the shared history of the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area. Moweaqua and Strasburg each have one in their park and Shelbyville has five spread throughout the city!
The Looking for Lincoln Story Trail helps each of us and our communities bring our unique Lincoln stories to life through wayside exhibits throughout the Abraham National Heritage Area. They help us not only tale a look at the life of Abraham Lincoln, but they help us develop a better understanding of the life he lived, the people he knew, the times he lived in and the communities with who he shared so much of his life.
