SPECIAL TO THE HBCU ADVOCATE Talladega College, in Alabama,

recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art, named after Hampton University President

and historically Talladega College

alumnus, Dr. William R. Harvey. The art museum, located on the black college campus, the

is now the permanent home of

Amistad Murals painted by Hale Woodruff. These paintings previously hung from the walls of

the Savery

Library for almost 70 years before Talladega College President Dr. Billy C. Hawkins had them removed for appraisal. Valued at $40 million, the murals were restored with the assistance of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta Georgia before they were sent on a three-year, eight-city tour. Their value rose to $50 million before they found their permanent home at the college’s museum. Dr. Harvey gifted a record $1.3 to Talladega

million College, which helped in the creation of the museum.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony more than 25 speakers took to the podium including Dr. Harvey and Dr. Hawkins.

“Understanding the impact alone

that this institution has played in my life and recognizing the importance of giving back and supporting Black colleges is the primary reason that Dr. Hawkins came to my office. And I am just as happy as I could be. I hope that some of you can continue this. I like to raise money for worthy causes and this is absolutely a worth cause. For those students that are here, I want you to know how fortunate you are to be a part of this great legacy that is Talladega College. The kind of leadership you have is absolutely outstanding.

Board members,

continue to support him, because he needs support,” Dr. Harvey stated about the College and its President during the ceremony. Dr. Harvey gave more emotional about his time at
