General Secretary’s Report Dear Members

We are already over half way through the year, and I am sure many of our members are looking forward to their holidays.

We are continuing with

our task of updating our image, and increasing our membership numbers. Our sub-committee under Katy Moss, continues to make progress, several marketing companies have been approached and one of these companies will make a presentation to council, in September.

We do have a few new members each month but we know many more people in our industry would benefit from being members of our Institute, so we are trying to reach out to these people in several ways, we will continue to supply journals to conferences and exhibitions, but we now feel that we need to have a greater presence on social media, to contact what some would call the younger or new generation of refractory engineers.

Most of our council members had a meeting in Sheffield with Michael Broadbent, who is one of the Australian committee members, who is involved with training. It was good to see what was being done in other parts of the world. We know there is a lack of training available today and as an Institute we continue to look at ways we can be involved. It was interesting that Michaels training program was very similar to the syllabus we have written for the CITB, Steve Parker is re-writing out guide to good practice and will be writing several articles about installation of refractories that will be in our journal, this is a long term project that will run for about two years as he looks at all types of installation.

We have just received our accounts from the accountants which are published in this journal, they have come in two days before the journal goes to print, there are a couple of minor coding errors which I have spotted, but the bottom line remains the same. They show a small profit in the main account and a loss in Australia this is mainly due to exchange rate movements as we report in UK pounds not Australian dollars.
